Admission Requirements, Education Specialist and Doctorate Degree Programs

Applicants who are admitted into any education specialist or doctorate degree program have met the following admission requirements:

  • Submit a completed application and $60 (USD, non-refundable) application fee, payable by credit card, available here by creating your own JIU password-protected account.
  • Submit an official transcript that documents an earned master's degree and a minimum GPA of 3.0 from a college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (or its international equivalent.)
  • Submit a well-written essay.
  • Submit a professional resume.
  • Submit three strong recommendations from professionals who are familiar with his/her academic and/or field performance.

In addition, applicants who are admitted into the Education Specialist or Doctorate in K-12 Education Leadership degree program have met the following admission requirements:

  • Submit an official transcript that documents an earned bachelor's degree and a minimum GPA of 2.5 from a regionally-accredited college or university (or its international equivalent.)
  • Submit a completed Colorado fingerprint card and $39.50 (USD) fee (money order or cashier's check only) made payable to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation OR proof of professional state-endorsed K-12 teaching, principal or administrator's license/certificate that requires a security background check, including fingerprinting.
  • Sign and submit "PK-12 Educators Program Checklist."

Transfer Credit

Students in Doctorate of Education and the Doctorate of Business Administration are encouraged to transfer up to thirty-six (36) credit hours of B or higher coursework earned at other colleges and universities within the past 15 years.  Students in the Education Specialist degree may transfer up to eighteen (18) credit 700- and 800-level credits of B or higher coursework earned at other colleges and universities within the past 15 years.  A student who transfers in credit is required to audit the respective course.

Official transcripts are required for transfer credit, and JIU is equipped to assist students in acquiring transcripts.

JIU does not accept remedial, developmental or vocational transfer credit, or credit earned at colleges and universities that are not recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (or its international equivalent.)

Applied Credit

Students in the JIU EdS degree program may apply up to 33 credit hours toward the JIU EdD in K-12 Education Leadership degree program.

Education Specialist and Doctorate Degree Early Admission Program

JIU allows college students in their final term of enrollment before conferment of their master's degree to apply for conditional admission into an education specialist or doctorate degree program.  The applicant must submit a completed application, $60 (USD, non-refundable) application fee, the early admission agreement for education specialist or doctoral degree programs and a transcript request release form.

Conditional and Special Circumstances Admission

Conditional and special circumstances admission is considered on a case-by-case basis by the deans of schools.
